my brown eyed boy

two big, brown eyes blink back at me
pools of pure chocolate perfection
seeing the world for the very first time
wide-eyed wonder

i wonder
what will those eyes see?
i wonder
where will life take my little boy?
i wonder
i worry
i whisper fervent prayers
for safekeeping
for delight in life
for beauty
for love

i want to hold him close
in my arms
forever
keep him safe
from the world
and its sorrows
he's so vulnerable
and so very little
but already...
he squirms away from my embrace
and i watch
with whispered prayers
with worry
with wide-eyed wonder

as only a mother can.
